Departemen Sastra Jerman resmi berdiri pada tanggal 6 Mei 1999 sebelumnya dengan nama Jurusan Sastra Jerman. Tahun 2022 beralih nama menjadi Departemen Sastra Jerman, seiring dengan resminya Universitas Negeri Malang yang menjadi PTN-BH.
