History

The German Language Education Study Program (PSPBJ) Department of German Literature (JSJ), Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang (UM) originates from the German Language Section which together with the English section is part of the Foreign Language Department at the Teaching Faculty of Education, Universitas Airlangga which opened in 1961. Lectures were held in Malang and examinations were held in Surabaya. In 1967 the German Language Section was officially closed and transferred to the Surabaya IKIP. However, in the period between 1961 - 1967, three batches of bachelors with Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees had produced.

In order to make the most of existing lecturers, while waiting for the opening of the major program, in 1988 a German language minor program was started for interested IKIP Malang students. In early 1994, with eight German teaching staff and a flexible curriculum, proposals for opening study programs were submitted several times.

Then in 1999 by taking advantage of the momentum of the change from IKIP to Malang State University, a proposal was again submitted to the opening of German Language Education study program. The result, on May 6, 1999, with the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 205 / DIKTI / Kep / 1999 The German Language Education Program was officially opened and started accepting new students.

On May 12, 2000 with the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 143 / DIKTI / Kep / 2000 regarding the Types and Number of Departments in the Faculty in the State University of Malang, the German Language Study Program changed to the Department of German Literature, so that currently the Department of German Literature and Department of Literature Each Arabic stands alone.
